Stage of the Art brings the avant-garde of contemporary musical creation to the 29th Hyères International Festival of Fashion and Photography, with the support of Red Bull Studios Paris.
Stage of the Art produces musical events in exceptional art spaces that build bridges between different creative fields. For the fourth consecutive year, Stage of the Art is the producer and musical programmer of the Hyères International Festival of Fashion and Photography.
After Auckland, Los Angeles, London and Cape Town, last September it was Paris’s turn to welcome the new Red Bull Studios, a platform that hosts, supports and promotes the local and European independent music scene. It was therefore natural for the studio to host the artists and collaborate with Stage of The Art in the musical programming of the Festival.
For the 2014 edition, the prestigious setting of the gardens of the Villa Noailles will host three musical sessions for three rising stars: CHLÖE HOWL, JAAKKO EINO KALEVI and C.A.R. Each of the artists will have enjoyed a creative residency at Red Bull Studios in Paris and London. And each will produce a new piece of music performed for the first time at the Festival!
CHLÖE HOWL
A new pop sensation, CHLÖE HOWL saw her name climb to the top of the charts and her songs broadcast by the BBC in 2013. While her track ‘Rumor’ was causing an international buzz on the web, the young Chlöe Howl took the stage at Glastonbury Festival. Barely 19, she became the phenomenon of the year and a legitimate pretender to the throne of irreverent princess of pop occupied for several years by Lily Allen. The bubbly English singer spins tales of youth in all its ambiguity and adolescent torments with blithe nonchalance. Her sublime voice, her haunting electro-pop melodies and her frenzied rhythms are refreshing and provocative.

JAAKKO EINO KALEVI
In 2012 a trio of Finnish designers won first prize in the Festival; in 2013 it was won by the Finnish designer Satu Maaranen. This year Finland takes to the musical stage. Already a cult figure in Helsinki, JAAKKO EINO KALEVI was the first Scandinavian artist to be signed by the label Domino (Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys, The Kills). The multi-instrumentalist plays with electric arpeggios, magnetic bass-lines and ethereal chants. Situated somewhere between the past and the future, Kalevi’s sound above all resonates in the present moment. His composition flirts freely with light psychedelics and synthetic funk. His music unleashes a mysterious ambiance that propels you into a 1980s film. A dreamlike Finnish road trip.

C.A.R
“Luminous, poetic and radical”, C.A.R. Is the solo project of Chloe Raunet. The singer of the former London coldwave electronic duo Battant, C.A.R is recognised for her captivating stage presence.
Her first EP enthralled the music world, who rushed to offer her remixes (Timothy J Fairplay, Krikor, Discodeine), collaborations (Hermès fashion show, Ivan Smagghe…) and tours supporting Cat Power and Gesaffelstein! C.A.R.’s music is a red-hot paradox, a moonlit dance weaving its way between allegories and the sensuality of melancholy. The voice merges with electronic experiments, an omnipresent bass, icy synth and heartbeat percussion to form spellbinding crystalline melodies.
Each of C.A.R.’s tracks unleashes an imagery. A different mood. Her first album is due for release in May 2014 (Kill the Dj records).

In addition to these performances the artist PEREZ, a favourite at our 2013 edition, will perform a sound piece conceived as a fantasy interpretation of the history of the Villa Noailles.

Founded in 1986, directed by Jean-Pierre Blanc since its creation and presided over by Didier Grumbach since 1997, the Hyères International Festival of Fashion and Photography promotes the new generation of fashion designers and photographers in the magnificent and avant-garde setting of the château of Saint-Bernard, known as the villa Noailles.
This year, the fashion jury is presided over by the Californian duo Carol Lim and Humberto Leon. Known for their creative and original fizz, the creative directors of the house of KENZO have no qualms about overturning the codes of the establishment. The American actress Chloë Sévigny, Carol Song, head buyer for Opening Ceremony, Jay Massacret, editor of VMan and Eric Wilson, fashion director of Instyle USA, join the brilliant KENZO duo on the jury that will choose the winner from among the 10 shortlisted designers. The celebrated fashion photographer Steve Hiett will preside over the photography jury. Known as “the director of colour”, he works with the world’s great fashion magazines including Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar.
