Neon Neon
When Gruff Rhys, leader of cult welsh band Super Furry Animals meets producer Boom Bip, abstract hip-hop guru, you get Neon Neon, a band which could have been Patrick Bateman’s (American Psycho) favourite. Their album, dedicated to the creator of the DeLorean, revisits all the classics of 80’s pop music, with the two of them trying out their talents on all kinds of musical styles, from mainstream to electronic pop, from disco to crunk.
Har Mar Superstar
It’s hard to miss Har Mar Superstar on stage: to see a Lester Bangs lookalike in pink underwear singing odes to dirty love over electronic RnB beats, interspersed with break-dance demonstrations, can be a traumatising experience. Outstanding performer, with a brilliant reputation among the indie rockers, Har Mar Superstar, when he is not writing a hit single for J-Lo or Kelly Osborne, is the only artist able to make the young Animal Collective loving hipsters enjoy RnB.
S.CU.M.
Though you would swear they are from Manchester, this post punk quintet stems from the musical swamps of London’s East End. Proud descendants of PIL and Joy Division, with a singer whose voice reminds us of the late Ian Curtis, this band appears to be the English answer to American madmen, the Liars.
